A Few things I learned in College

I have been wanting to do this post for a number of months....

I would just like to share a few things I learned while earning my BS of Biology at DSC the past 5 years.

1. Spin Vanes in an Organic Chemistry lab can make things explode.
2. DiChloromethane & Alumina Silca gel won't ruin your clothes.
3. Data is plural- Datum is singular.
4. Some people really like squirrels. I mean really love squirrels and shirts with squirrels on them. Sometimes these type of people become professors.
5. Voles and Wolves are not the same thing.
6. It is okay to love methylation and pH- but you really should know what a vole is.
7. The eyeball is designed backwards.
8. Evolution is real and I believe in it. That does not mean I think we came from Monkeys.
9. Taxonomy is confusing and dumb.
10. Save your school work in about a million different places. (Turns out you should also save your pictures from your camera in about a million different places.)
11. Parasites are so gross and fascinating but taking parasitology will make you want to be tested for everything.
12. Never walk by the "FREE" shelf at the library without stopping to see what books are available for your taking. There are many gems to be found there.
13. Teachers have bad days too.
14. Portable pools and Extreme Slip 'N' Slides are awesome. I especially thing port-a-pools are great to get lounge in on the way to get a sno cone.
15. Bio Majors are fun in class but when it comes to P-A-R-T-Y time most of them are duds.
16. It is completely possible to spend 14 hours at the school in one day. It is also possible to leave after being there 14 hours and still feel overwhelmed... on multiple occasions.
17. CVP lab is the most entertaining lab offered at DSC,
18. Hearing "Everyone switches majors" is annoying. I am not everyone.
19. Playing with giant vibrators in lab is hilarious, as is playing with beer goggles... or should I mention racing in beer goggles.
20. Group dates are ALWAYS weird. Especially with the X-Club... Having a date that only wanted you to be his date because you understood chemistry and wanted to win the boat making competition.
21. Turns out sometimes you don't understand chemistry as well as you thought- who knew that super glue melted Styrofoam? It also ruins your boat.
22. Dance parties never get old.
23. Buying things off infomercials can be awesome- Betty Crocker Bake-N-Fill anyone?
24. If you only put deodorant under one arm- it is a legit reason to skip class to go home and put deodorant on under the other arm.
25. Gutter weeding people is a great way to spend spring break.
26. You are never too old to Toilet Paper someones house.
27. It is possible to spend 12 nights in a row during freshman year sleeping at other people's apartments because the freeway keeps you up at night.
28. Jumping the fence to run in sprinklers at the DSC Football Field is both dangerous (cuts from the fence) and super fun.
29. Being nice to a new lab partner the first day of class can change your whole life.
30. Going to get smoothies with most the girls after class at Emerald City Smoothie will also change your life.
31. Vandalism is sometimes necessary when it comes to making memories and leaving your mark.
32. You never know where you will meet your new best friends.
33. Its not the end of the world if your roommate smokes some weed in her room- just open your windows.
34. Being a rodeo queen is cool. The white wranglers? not so much...
35. If you have to watch a movie for one of your classes that you are not keen on you have two options. 1- Watch it in Fast Forward (from physics with KF) or 2- sneak a lot of treats into the library.
36. Ice cream tastes the very best in the library while you are studying O Chem.
37. Being sandwiched between 2 girls in one room can be the best semester of your life.
38. All night concert trips are sometimes both necessary and needed.
39. If you have ambassador class at 7:00 AM- don't schedule class at 8:00 AM. You will rarely make it to the 8 o'clock class.
40. Sometimes it is okay to find a sweatshirt on a bench, take it home, wash it, and wear it the rest of the semester.
41. If a roommate is fighting with a bulimic habitual lying roommate because the bulimic roommate once again binged on your (you and the 1st roommate) food and once again denied ever doing it- simply dip the oreo you are eating into the jar of peanut butter she is waving around and do not crack a smile. It will make the two of you crack up for days.
42. If you don't want to talk to someone coming to the door- turn off all the lights, lock the door, and lay on the floor. Also- try not to giggle. Apparently the person on the other side of the door can hear that.
43. A competition or group effort to kiss people inside all the buildings at the college will make for plenty of giggle fits. Also it makes for plenty of strange memories.
44. Every once in a blue moon a girl can get lucky and score higher on a test than all the future doctors/dentists/pharmacist.
45. Nothing feels better than getting 100% on a chemistry exam.
46. I learned 2 things in English 2020. 1- Seinfield has a soup nazi. 2- You can write a 10 page paper on Dr. Seuss and get an A.
47. Wearing gloves in O. Chem Lab is probably a good idea.... especially if you are partners with Elizabeth.
48. Many fond memories are made in o chem lab- and many strange conversations take place.
49. Besides Acetone- Iron Acid will also remove nail polish.
50. It is possible to get a chemical burn on your fingernail.
51. The next few are from Parasitology: WASH YOUR HANDS!!!
52. Don't let your poop touch anything that might touch your food. Ever.
53. Don't reuse toilet water for anything.
54. Don't let your dog or cat lick you.
55. Anus creeping is sick.
56. It is possible to eat your lunch or snack while viewing some of the most disgusting slides during parasitology or infectious disease.
57. Graduation is not nearly as sad as you might expect.
58. Field Trips are fun. Especially to California.
59. If a professor invites you to her house for game night you should go- it is a blast. Especially if the game night involves BioLoves, parasites, and food.
60. Ending your undergraduate college life with a cross country road trip is the only way to do it.

I could go on and on. I miss college and have many wonderful memories. So I guess here is where I put a plug in to say THANKS for all you wonderful people who made my time at DSC amazing.

oh- and if you are giving a campus tour HS seniors- expect to get hit on.
- The counselors don't know diddly.
- It is perfectly acceptable to go through boys like water. Why? Because it keeps your friends entertained.
- The librarian is always watching. She will know if you eat that granola bar in one of the study rooms in the middle of the day.
- All college students should attend as many of the activities as they can.
- Moving into a house not knowing anyone is scary- but I got Trish and Shauntae that way.
- Pranks keep things interesting.
- 4 girls in 1 stall raises suspicions.
- Having matching bikes and outfits is cool. Wearing matching outfits while riding matching bikes is even more cool.
- Lounging is a sport.
- You can impress numerous amounts of people by living on a pure sugar diet. Trying to live on diet coke and cheetos can be tricky.
- Being smart is attractive.

Now I think I am done for the night. Happy September everyone!
